St Lucy of Syracusa Italy

Virgin Martyr  Feast Day 13th December

 Novena

( Patron Saint of eye problems, throat infections)

Rich, young Christian who vowed her life to Christ. Her Roman father died when she was young. Her mother, Eutychia, arranged a marriage for her. For three years she managed to keep the marriage on hold.

To change the mother's mind about the girl's new faith, Lucy prayed at the tomb of  Saint Agatha , and her mother's long hemorrhagic illness was cured.

Her mother agreed with Lucy's desire to live for God, and Lucy became known as a patron of those with maladies like her mother's.

Her rejected pagan bridegroom, Paschasius, denounced Lucy as a Christian. The governor planned to force her into prostitution, but when guards went to fetch her, they could not move her even when they hitched her to a team of oxen. The governor ordered her killed instead. After torture that included having her eyes torn out, she was surrounded by bundles of wood which were set afire; they went out. She prophesied against her persecutors, and was executed by being stabbed to death with a dagger.

Legend says her eyesight was restored before her death. This and the meaning of her name led to her connection with eyes, the blind, eye trouble, etc.

Born

Died
Stabbed in the throat c.304 at Syracuse, Sicily; her relics are honoured in churches throughout Europe

1.   Prayer to Saint Lucy of Syracuse

Patroness of the Blind and of Eye problems

Relying on Your goodness, O God,

We humbly ask You, through the intercession of Saint Lucy,

Virgin and Martyr, to give perfect vision to our eyes,

that they may serve for Your greater honor and glory.

Saint Lucy, hear our prayers and obtain our petitions. Amen

11.  Prayer   Saint Lucy of Syracuse

Saint Lucy, your beautiful name signifies light.

By the light of faith which God bestowed upon you,

Increase and preserve this light in my soul so that I may avoid evil,

Be zealous in the performance of good works,

And abhor nothing so much as the blindness and the darkness of evil and of sin.

By your intercession with God, obtain for me perfect vision for my bodily eyes

And the grace to use them for God's greater honor and glory

and the salvation of all men.

Saint Lucy, virgin and martyr, hear my prayers and obtain my petitions. Amen.

Prayer to Saint Lucy of Syracuse

Saint Lucy, you did not hide your light under a basket,

but let it shine for the whole world, for all the centuries to see.

We may not suffer torture in our lives the way you did,

But we are still called to let the light of our Christianity

illumine our daily lives.

Please help us to have the courage to bring our Christianity

into our work, our recreation, our relationships, our conversation

-- every corner of our day.

 Amen
